PartyBets Dreads a Phil Ivey Win at the 2009 World Series of Poker Main Event

Online bookmaker PartyBets stated on October 29th, 2009 that a Phil Ivey win in the 2009 WSOP (world series of poker) Main Event could affect a lot of bookmakers.

A spokesperson for the PartyPoker sister site said that an Ivey win will be a bad result for them and they think that the bookmaking market as whole will have substantial liabilities. The spokesperson added that a well-known poker pro on the final table of the World Series of Poker is always bad new for bookmakers and they do not come bigger than Phil Ivey.

Despite the fact that Ivey is sitting in 7th place in total chips coming into the November 7th, 2009 final table, PartyBets says that it is facing a substantial six digit liability on the event that Phil Ivey take home the World Series of Poker Main Event title. The chances on Ivey winning the tournament are at 6:1 but were at 175:1 earlier this year at 100:1 as the WSOP Main Event started. The PartyBets spokesman said that 175:1 as a starting price for a poker player in a field of 6,494 participants is considered to short.

The spokesman added that Ivey's true odds could have been twice that amount but they had to price him short because punters support the name. They are keeping their fingers cross that Ivey does not manage to mount a comeback. After the members of the 2009 WSOP Main Event was determined, bookmakers Bodog and Betfair announced that most of the action was being wagered on Ivey to win the title, scaling down the odds significantly.

Betfair currently lists Phil Ivey as 7:1 and Bodog has Ivey at 4:1. PartyBets believes that it is not the only online site that will be affected if the Team Full Tilt poker pro achieves a victory in the main event. PartyBets.com currently has final table chip leader Darvin Moon as the 4:1 favorite followed by poker pro Eric Buchman at 5:1.

Ivey only has a slight chip lead on Everest Poker qualifier Antoine Saout but Saout has a 17:1 odds. Despite a string of success since booking their slots at the final table, James Akenhead still has 15:1 odds while Kevin Schaffel has 13:1 odds. PartyBets lists poker pro Jeff Shulman and Steve Begleiter at 7:1 while Joseph Cada has 13:1 odds. PartyBets customers can also wager on the winning card hand, the final river card and its suit and color.
