Texas Student Online Qualifier for 2006 WSOP

University of Texas economics senior Andrew Webb has earned a spot in the much-coveted $10,000 buy-in 2006 World Series of Poker Main Event by playing on a "freeroll" tournament online.

Entering in the event is a dream come true for any poker amateur and poker fan as they will have a chance to go head to head with the poker greats like Doyle Brunson and Johnny Chan and poker superstars such as Mike "The Mouth" Matasou and Phil Ivey.

"I'm real excited to play against pros whose books I've read," Webb said.

Freeroll tournaments have been enjoying popularity in recent years as many of the top finishes in the WSOP have been online amateur qualifiers.

Webb's father, Bill, said he that has always been mathematically inclined and he sees this as one of his advantages in poker.

"Ever since Andrew was a small boy, he was fascinated with games. At 4 or 5 he would want people to play Trivial Pursuit with, even though there was no way he could answer the questions," Webb's father said.

The 21-year old appears calm at the prospect of facing off with the poker industry greats.

"I want to make sure I'm playing to give myself the best possible chance to win," said Webb, who starts participating in the tournament on July 28. "But I believe that I can play against anyone."
