1,128 women entered the Ladies No-Limit Hold'em tournament at the 2006 World Series of Poker, making it the largest field in poker history in the category.
The event was star-studded, as it was sprinkled with Hollywood celebrities, including last year's bracelet winner Oscar Nominated Jennifer Tilly. Tilly has been credited for the unprecedented pupolarity of the game among women, the figure almost doubling from 600 last year.
"Jennifer Tilly has helped fuel the explosive growth in the popularity of women's poker," said Jeffrey Pollack, commissioner of the World Series of Poker. "She was a gracious winner of last year's event and has been a terrific ambassador for the game.
"Tilly is part of team Elle magazine and PartyPoker.net together with actresses Shannon Elizabeth. Other top players in the team include Alison Worth and Katie Porrello. The ELLE team members will donate a percentage of any of their winnings to the American Heart Association, and team sponsors will match those donations.
Hollywood Poker also sent a team that included stars Anne Heche, Ricki Lake, Victoria Pratt, Jean Smart, Mimi Rogers, Mena Suvari and Kelly Hu.The start of the Ladies tournament drew the largest crowd of spectators thus far, with the crowd hoping to catch a glimpse of Hollywood celebrities. The final round of the two-day Ladies tournament is set to begin at 2 p.m. Monday, July 10.
