The New Zealand Poker Championship and the EPT San Remo Main Event

The game of poker has become very popular all over the world that on any given weekend, there are different poker championship events being held somewhere in the world. The New Zealand Poker Championship was held on April 19th, 2010 and it ended the same as it had in 2009.

Poker pro Soren Eriksen fought his way through the 80 person main event and won his 2nd consecutive New Zealand Poker Championship. Eriksen won a total of $60,000. He said that winning the tournament was very special since he and his wife just opened their own boutique ale in Blenheim and his winnings will help them get off the ground.

He added that he plans to defend his title next year and make it three years in a row. While that event may have been the main draw in New Zealand, many top poker players were participating in the EPT (European Poker Tour) San Remo Main Event. Jason Mercier and Bertrand Grospellier both tried their luck at the main event but were sent home and cashed in on Day 3.

Currently, only 66 players out of the playing field of more than 1,100 poker players remain. Jakob Karlsson is the chip leader with a total of 1,800,000 chips. Kadir Karabulut is in 2nd place with 1,577,000 chips and Allan Baekke and Dmitry Stelmak are a close 3rd and 4th place, with 1,485,000 chips and 1,443,000 chips respectively.

Many of these international poker events are leading up to what will be another blockbuster field at the WSOP (world series of poker) in Las Vegas, Nevada this summer. Although the main event attendance has fallen in past years, the overall attendance has remained highly for the majority of the poker events in the WSOP.
