The organizers of the World Series of Poker are already preparing for their 10,000 participants in this year's WSOP main event. That is a 14% increase compared to the participants in the previous WSOP main event, even with the ongoing US crackdown on online poker sites that have been the main force on the popularity enjoyed by poker in the first place.
Organizers commented that the initial number was for planning purposes only and is not in any way an indicator of the number of participants this year, which will exceed the 8,773 participants last year. Almost half the players last year were the winners from the online qualifier events.
The tournament officials are already planning to construct a building beside the Rio Casino Hotel in Las Vegas, which will increase the number of tables up to 258. That will be more than enough for over 3,000 poker players that will be seeing action for the first 3 days of the poker tournament. A larger number of participants will more than guarantee that the prize for last year's WSOP of $12 million will be exceeded this time around.
