The World Series of Golf at Las Vegas Paiute Golf Resort

On April 17th, 2009, the pokerized golf hybrid event, the World Series of Golf (WSG), is returning to Las Vegas, Nevada for a third time, scheduled for May 11th, 2009 until May 15th, 2009. Sponsored by Full Tilt Poker, this one-of-a kind event will take place at the Las Vegas Paiute Golf Resort made by famous golf course architect Pete Dye.

Like the poker event that it is named after, the World Series of Golf features a $10,000 buy-in cost. But the similarities end there, as this tournament will be limited to 125 participants, restricted to golf amateurs. The top twenty-five players will receive a piece of the $700,000 cash pool with the winner taking home $300,000. The format of the World Series of Golf combines the mental challenge of wagering strategy with the physical aspect of playing golf. It is made for golfers with medium-high handicaps.

Similar to a poker shootout event, participants are divided into different groups and the winner of each group-the player who gets all the chips from his opponents-will advance to the next round until one player is left standing. At each hole, participants must ante before teeing off and succeeding shots are then followed by a wagering round where participants can choose if they want to raise, wager, check or fold based on how well they did in their last shot.

Golf professionals may not be allowed to participate in the event but a lot of poker players have played in the tournament including Phil Ivey, Chris Ferguson, Allen Cunningham, Erick Lindgren and Daniel Negreanu-with golf enthusiast Negreanu already blogging about his plans to participate at the 2009 World Series of Golf.

The tournament has also drawn a number of celebrities from entertainment and professional sport. The entry cost includes 4 nights of accommodations at the Mirage in Las Vegas, Nevada. For more information, participants can log-in at worldseriesofgolf.com.
