Vanessa Selbst Wins the 2010 PokerStars NAPT $5,000 Mohegan Sun Event

Poker pro Vanessa Selbst has won the 2010 PokerStars NAPT (North American Poker Tour) Mohegan Sun $5,000 No-Limit Holdem main event on April 11th, 2010. She outwitted a final table that included Cliff Josephy, Scott Seiver and Jonathan Aguiar to take home the $750,000 1st place cash prize.

She entered the final table with 4,545,000 in 2nd place chip position and then she put on quite a display on her to victory. She sent home three of her fellow final table players to become the first female champion of a North American Poker Tour event and she now has $1,672,885 in total poker career earnings.

One poker player was sent home within the first 10 at the final table when Jonathan Aguiar moved all-in on the pre-flop with his A-Q and Michael Woods decided to call with his pocket 10's. The board showed a third 10 for Woods and Aguiar hit the rail in 8th place ($60,244).

One hour later, another well-known poker player fell when Cliff Josephy moved all-in with his A(hearts) 5(hearts) in the pre-flop and Derek Raymond called with his A(diamonds) 9(clubs). The board ran out A(spades) 8(spades) 7(diamonds) 3(hearts) J(clubs) and Joseph was eliminated in 7th place ($85,000 dollar).

The eliminations continued when Derek Raymond decided to go all-in on the pre-flop one hour later. He held A(clubs) 10(hearts) while Selbst held 6(diamonds) 6(spades) and the board showed K(clubs) Q(hearts) 7(clubs) 8(spades) 4(diamonds). Raymond won $115,000 for his efforts. It took another hour for the next elimination hand to happen and during that time Selbst improved her chip stack to 10.3 million with aggressive play.

She held more than twice the total chips of each of her fellow players at the final table. Alistar Melville finished in 5th place and took home $150,000. Melville decided to move all-in on the flop with his pocket queens on his final card hand and he was miles ahead of Mike Beasley's A-Q until an ace showed up on the flop.

Scott Seiver went all-in a few minutes later with pocket 4's and Michael Woods called with his A-three. The board showed A/10/6/Q/7 and Seiver finished in 4th place ($190,000).

Selbst went all out once three-handed play started. She sent home Woods in 3rd place ($240,000), which improved her chip stack to 18,810,000 (more than 87% of the chips in play). After making a 310,000 raise that was called by Selbst preflop, Woods wager 700,000 on a 9(diamonds) 8(clubs) 6(spades) flop.

Vanessa Selbst raised to 1.8 million and Woods re-raised all-in to 3,425,000. Selbst called and they flipped up their cards: Selbst had 8(spades) 8(hearts) and Woods had 10(clubs) 9(hearts). The turn and river showed A(spades) 10(hearts). Selbst then carried her 18,810,000 in the heads-up showdown against Beasley, who held 2,755,000 chips.

The match lasted for thirty minutes and the defeat of Beasley happened over two card hands. In the 1st hand, he wagered one million on a K/8/3 flop and Selbst re-raised all-in. Beasley folds and that left him with just 1.2 million. He decided to move all-in on the flop with Q(hearts) 10(spades) on the next card hand and Selbst called with her A(hearts) 8(spades).

The board was given K(diamonds) 6(clubs) 3(diamonds) 7(clubs) 8(clubs) and Selbst revealed a pair to win the title. Beasley finished in 2nd place and he won $428,000.

There is still more game of poker to be played at the North American Poker Tour stop at Mohegan Sun. The $25,000 high-roller bounty event will begin on April 12th, 2010, 12:00 noon EDT.
