Vanessa Selbt came close to making it to the history books of the World Series of Poker. But as luck would have it, her bluff was called, and she settled for a $101,285 win instead.
The 21 year-old from Montclair finished in 7th place in a field of 1,919 participants last week in the $2,000 No-Limit Hold'Em event at the Rio All-Suite Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas.
Selbst was third in chips when the final table play began. She impressively eliminated former world champion Carlos Mortenson in this round, a move that quickly placed her in second.
However her attempt to join the rank of only 9 other women who are WSOP bracelet holders was foiled when she tried to bluff futilely against chip leader Kevin Peterson. The 5 and 2 of spades that she held were no match for Peterson's pocket aces. And as if that wasn't good enough, Peterson flopped a third ace and got the fourth on the river.
But it was a good day nevertheless for Selbst, who undeniably has a more than average mind as she is a Yale graduate and a Fulbright scholar.
The event was ultimately won by Australian Mark Vos, who raked in a whopping $803,274.
