Student Hopes to Win Tuition Through Poker

Many students are self-supporting, whether by choice or by chance. Some are lucky enough (and brainy enough) to land themselves scholarship, but those without the benefit of full subsidy need to think of ways to get themselves through college. One such student is David Wood.

David is one of AbsolutePoker.com's finalists for the online poker site's Win Your Tuition tournament. A year's worth of college tuition is at stake in the poker tournament, a great opportunity for any student struggling to keep up with the cost of education. He and five other students across the country will be competing for the coveted first place.

"It's really not a question; I'm going to win the thing," said Wood. A mock poker competition has already been played by the finalists online where David won. "I'm much, much better in person," he added.

Wood has always been fond of gambling, even at a young age. He has been playfully betting against friends since he was younger on games like pool and basketball. When he was 14, he started playing poker after a trip to the Bahamas. "(It's) just as intense, just as fun and a lot more math," said Wood.

Even when playing poker, Wood is relating lessons that he has learned in the classroom to his game. He refers to his statistics class as a major help, one of the factors that helped him reach the finals in the online poker site sponsored tournament. "I was really into the whole math thing at the moment," he said.

He relates that prior to the qualifying tournament, he was immersed in studying for his finals in statistics. He was busy studying for three straight days, a state of mind that he refers to as 'math mood' that carried over to the qualifying tournament of the online poker site.

"Statistics is a whole lot of poker," he said. "It just worked out really great, knowing my odds, occasionally catching cards."

The Win Your Tuition tournament is a great way to help students, getting them through college through their hobby according to Benjamin James, the head of the college development project for AbsolutePoker.com. "Tuition is a prize that every college student needs help with," he said.

According to James, the tournament will take place at New York City nightclub, Crobar. It will be held on August 8 to be followed by a party on August 9. The poker competition will be broadcast by MTV. For more information visit www.winyourtuition.com.
