Ragnar Astrom Defeats Martin Jacobson for the WPT Venice Tournament Title

On May 11th, 2009, the World Poker Tour's inaugural stop to Italy finished on Sunday with Sven Ragnar Astrom of Sweden taking home a total of $397,960 1st place cash prize. When the play started in the final 6 players at the Casino di Venezia, it was another Swedish player that looks poised to win the title.

Poker pro Martin Jacobson edged out Mario Adinolfi in the initial card hand of the final table with king cards over queen cards, then sent home Michele Slam in 5th place with 10's over 6's. The main name in the final 6 players was Canadian poker pro Michael "Timex" McDonald. But even the 2008 European Poker Tour Dortmund champion and newly hired Full Tilt poker pro could not defeat Jacobson. He place all his chips in with the top card pair against the Swede's lower pair and a flush draw, going out in 4th place when the river gave Jacobson a two pair.

Sponsor bwin poker had thirteen poker qualifiers make it into the month, including poker player Vincent Pasdeloup, who won his World Poker Tour Venice slot in a freeroll event on bwin and turned that into 159,740 euros for a 3rd place finish. Jacobson then head into the heads-up showdown holding a chip lead over Astrom but it would not carry him to the finish line.
