On April 27, 2007, the Amateur Poker Tour offices at 9751 West 44th Avenue Wheat Ridge, Colorado were searched by agents armed with search warrants. No one was arrested by the agents during the raid but the state agents confiscated documents and papers.
The Colorado Division of Gaming collaborated with the Colorado Bureau on the investigation. The main goal of the investigation was the $199 fee that the Amateur Poker Tour charges their customers for VIP Gold Cards, which gives the player some privileges like different prizes and free playing hours.
A CBI Agent, Ralph Gagliari, stated that in Colorado social poker games are permitted, but they will become illegal if the host of the game charges their players any kind of fee to participate in the game.
The agent also said that the raid does not mean that they are trying to stop poker in their territory because poker tournaments are becoming more popular these days and not all poker tournaments are considered illegal.
There are several poker tournaments that are currently running in Colorado and although some of the poker tournaments are giving prizes to their winners and not money, it is still illegal for anyone to pay in order to participate in the games.
