Poker Run Benefits Wildwood Food Pantry

The Villages Social Club held the Lynnhaven Friends Golf Cart poker Run on Saturday, November 18th for the benefit of the Wildwood Food Pantry.

The poker run started and ended at the Churchill Street Center pavilion. The event lasted the entire afternoon.

"It's fantastic," said Don Huggins. He was the person who accepted the $475 check donation raised by the poker run to the Wildwood Food Pantry.

"We appreciate donations from any group. We use the cash to fill in the blanks where food doesn't."

Huggins, along with his wife Marlene, is the food pantry coordinator. The husband and wife team is from the Village of Glenbrook.

The couple explains that the pantry serviced needy people residing in north Sumter County, an area that includes Oxford, Wildwood, Coleman, and Sumterville.

The pantry can be found at the grounds of Wildwood Methodist Church, located at 300 Mason Street.

Pantry volunteers make distributions twice monthly, serving 95 families on average for every distribution. For 2006, more than 2,200 volunteers were responsible for the feeding of 1,630 families or 3,600 people, 50,000 pounds of food.

"It takes a lot of people to put it together," Huggins said.
