High-stakes cash game player Nenad Medic was named champion of the World poker Finals Main Event at Foxwoods on Thursday, November 16. Medic bagged $1.7 million for his first place finish.
Medic waited patiently as the more aggressive players struck out one by one from a final table that lasted for only three hours.
E.G Harvin of Palm Beach, Fla. worked hard in the elimination process, bumping players out with his large stack. However, he could not eliminate Medic, who has been called one of poker's rising stars by Mike Sexton.
Harvin ended up walking away with $904,389.
Medic got good cards early in the event and was able to build a healthy stack that he used to his advantage. The event was the highest paying thus far in his young career.
Before his World Poker Finals win, his best was his third place finish in the 2005 Poker Stars Caribbean Adventure. He has been quoted as saying that the third place finish which was a "close, but not quite there finish" left a sour taste that he wanted to erase.
"When you come close, it just makes to want to win one more," Medic said. "I play a lot of these tournaments and I was told you can't miss Foxwoods because the field is usually juicy for a professional."
"I plan to give this money back to the poker community," Medic said. "The cash games might get a little richer in the next couple of months."
