On March 29th, 2008, the World Poker Challenge in Reno, Nevada finished up late that night with Lee Markholt capturing the championship of the $7,500 buy-in cost poker event. Markholt's WPT victory was the very first event win for Markholt since April 2005 when he became the champion of the Professional Poker Tournament Tour event at the Five Star Poker Classic.
Markholt won a total of $493,815 and the 238 points for the Bluff Magazine Player of the Year award. The runner-up in the event, Bryan Devonshire, won a total of $271,625. Zachary Hyman finished in 3rd place and won a total $149,862. Hyman previously held the chip lead in some stages of the event.
All of the top three finishers came into the table behind Jason Potter in chips but Potter was unable to keep his chip lead and end up finishing in 4th place. Potter earned a total $103,030.
Poker player David Pham finished in 5th place, winning a total of $93,664 and moving up the player of the year ladder. The 90.44 point he received will move him to 4th place in this year's race.
Jeff Dewitt was able to finish in sixth place and won a total of $84,297 dollars. The next event for the world poker tour is the Foxwoods Poker Classic which begins on April 4th, 2008 and will end on April 9th, 2008. The event will be held in Mashantucket, Connecticut.
