Malaysian Man Has Dreams Squashed Day One Of Betfair Asian Poker Tour; Lieu Advances

A Malaysian man dipped into his life savings just to be able to take part in the main event of the Betfair Asian Poker Tour in Singapore saying that he did not want to miss the chance of taking part in a major poker tournament.

The man, who simply wanted to be identified as Chua, said the experience was all worth it.

"I could not resist the chance to take part. This is my first time in a big event and I really want to gain valuable experience," he said, saying that he has been playing poker since he was 13.

Chua had to dole out US$5,000 (RM18,270) just to participate in the main event of the Betfair Asian Poker Tour.

"It is a fun and exciting game that tests your wits," said Kuala Lumpur native Chua.

"I researched and studied intensively to prepare for the tournament. I aim to give it my all so that the money spent would not be in vain," he said.

He was one of a handful of Malaysians who entered the event, but as luck would have it, he was eliminated Wednesday, November 15, the first day of the event.

This hasn't dampened his spirit though, saying the Betfair Asian Poker Tour experience had been valuable, and that he is looking to enter more competitions in the future.

But unlike Chua, another Asian, poker pro Liz Lieu, is doing well in the competition.

"I have done well for myself over the years since I started playing poker at 18.

"I love the challenge as it pushes me to be better at what I do," she said.
