Joe Hachem Scores Another Biggie at the 2006 WSOP

Australian poker superstar Joe Hachem has scored another big win at the World Series of Poker in Rio All-Suites Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, bagging $345,000 in second place at one tournament.

Despite the win, Hachem could not help but feel a little disappointed about not being in the first place. He outlasted 822 players before coming out second. The champion, American Russ Boyd from California got to take home $649,000.

"It's bittersweet. On one hand it's a great result but I'm not happy that I didn't win."

Hachem seemed set to beat Boyd but the turn of the final five of cards diamond gave the California native two pairs, and the championship.

Hachem described how he felt when he saw the cards, "my heart sank to my ankles".

"I had him right where I wanted him," he said. "I'm disappointed I didn't win. I pushed him as hard as I could," Hachem added.

The game was watched by Joe's wife Jeannie, who came up to hug him as soon as the No Limit Texas Hold'Em game was finished.

"She was disappointed for me. She's my No. 1 fan," Hachem said of his wife. "She said to me, I hope you are happy with the result," he added.

When asked what he intended to do with the $345,000 he earned for the 3-day poker tournament play, he laughed and said that he has not decided yet. But he had an idea, "Maybe I'll buy a property for one of the kids."

Hachem has this hope after bagging another big win: he hoped that this would send a message that he was a force to contend with in the poker world.

"Anyone in their own field wants the recognition they deserve, " Hachem explained.

This month Hachem will be defending his World Series of Poker world title in Las Vegas, competing for a first prize of a whopping $13.4 million.

Born Joseph Hachem in Lebanon, Joe's family moved to Australia in 1972 where he now resides. Hachem used to be a chiropractor until 2002 after being diagnosed with a rare blood disorder in his hands made him decide to concentrate on poker. On July 16, 2005, he won the WSOP Main Event, outlasting 5,619 players, the largest in the game's history. He is now a representative of PokerStars.com.

Joe Hachem is married to his 'no. 1 fan' Jeannie and has four children. As of 2006, his total live tournament winnings is estimated at $7,900,000. He is also currently appearing in Poker Superstars III.
