Hellmuth Sets Another WSOP Record

The opening week of the World Series of Poker saw Phil Hellmuth carving his name in the WSOP history books again by cashing in his 50th WSOP tournament.

Hellmuth, the owner of nine WSOP gold bracelets made another record for having the most money cashes with 50. Although there was some confusion and questions as to whether the in-the-money finish for event #2 was Hellmuth's 49th or indeed his 50th, it was straightened out soon enough as WSOP Nolan Dalla confirmed that it was his 50th over the weekend.

"Phil Hellmuth has clearly become an icon in a game full of icons," Dalla said.

"I always like to make poker records," Hellmuth, known for being a 'glutton' for coveting of poker records and accolades said.

Men "The Master" Nguyen and Berry Johnston are tied following Hellmuth at second place with one cash shy at 49. T.J. Cloutier falls in third with 47.

All the players mentioned are set to vie in future events of the 2006 WSOP, adding more excitement to the series of poker tournaments that is now enjoying unprecedented popularity.

Hellmuth has already raked in two more cashes since breaking the record. Event # 7, a $3,000 Limit Hold'Em tournament, saw him finishing at the final table at 13th place, and beginning July 5, Hellmuth is guarding a huge stack in event #9 a $5,000 No Limit Hold'em tournament that has 622 participants.
