On July 4th, 2008, twenty-three year old Michael DeMichele, who is studying at the Arlington High School in Freedom Plains, has finished second in a playing field of 148 players at the H.O.R.S.E. World Championship poker event at the world series of poker Event at the Rio Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada. DeMichele said that he has been primarily a high-stakes mixed poker games player and an online poker holdem player.
DeMichele, who finished in fourth place at the World Championship Mixed event at the World Series, won more than $1.2 million but it is still the gold bracelet that he wants to win at the end of 5 day H.O.R.S.E. poker event against poker pro Scotty Nguyen.
During the final table of the H.O.R.S.E. event, participants compete in 5 different variations of poker: Omaha High, where participants are given 4 cards together 3 community cards; Razz, a poker variation where the poker player receives a total of 7 cards and the combination of 5 cards that has the worst possibility will win; 7 card stud, in which the poker player is given 7 cards and the five cards hand that possess the best possible card hand; 8 or better, a combination of the last two poker variations, the cash pot is divided between the best 5 card combination, while the worst card hand cannot possess any card bigger than the eight card.
While the No Limit Texas poker game is the most well-known poker game because it is played in the World Series of Poker main event and numerous television shows like the NBC's "Poker After Dark" and Bravo's "Celebrity Poker Showdown," the H.O.R.S.E. event is known in the poker industry as the "Player's Championship" because of the different skills required to win. DeMichele's mother, Donna Place commented that her son is always competitive so it is one of the reasons why her son join the H.O.R.S.E. event.
