The World Series of Poker is making a stop in Council Bluffs and the town is excited to be hosting the event that has a projected $1 million prize pool.
The event kicked-off on Monday, January 29th at the Horseshoe Casino. An estimated 550 players registered for the event that had 30 tables filled in the Whiskey Roadhouse with 18 more tables in the Horseshoe's poker room.
The championship event is slated to take place on February 7th, and the winner will get a seat to the 2007 World Series of Poker main event in Las Vegas, scheduled to take place in July, as well as $1,000 in cash.
The circuit event taking place in Council Bluffs is one of the 12 qualifying tournaments. It includes a seminar on effective tournament strategies as presented by a professional player of the game of poker, Phil Gordon, set to take place Saturday.
"This is a very special opening for us," said WSOP commissioner, Jeffrey Pollack. Pollack does not normally attend openings for the franchise. "We're thrilled to bring the World Series of Poker here."
"Poker in the Heartland. You don't get much more grassroots than that," he said. "I talk about us as a 38-year-old start up," he added, dispelling the notion that the WSOP is a new affair.
"If it does well this year, I'm certain we'll be back," Pollack said of the Council Bluffs circuit event.
