On March 26th, 2008, poker player Neil "Bad Beat" Channing became the brand new 2008 Irish Poker Open champion after defeating a highly talented final table to win the majority of the three million euros cash pool. Playing at the poker tournament final table as the chip leader possessing $2.75 million of the $6.67 million in total play, Neil Channing quickly took over the reins of the table and continue to influence the whole table.
The poker player and author, who is a resident of Sunderland, England, took home the admiration and respect of the poker circuit, the honor of being the champion of the Irish Poker Open and about 801,400 pesos in cash prizes. Some of the 667 players that joined the event are Doyle Brunson, Marty Smyth, Andy Black, Ciaran O'Leary, Roland De Wolfe, David "Devilfish" Ulliott, Padraig Parkinson and many others.
In the final table, Channing utilized his large stack efficiently, defeating Danilo Paulson, Tim Blake and Thomas Dunwoodie. He was able to get the better of Donal Norton from Ireland in the final heads-up showdown and he was able to keep his superb play up until the very end to keep.
