On April 27, 2007, Carlos Mortensen or "El Matador" showed again why he is a respected poker player on the circuit by triumphing in the 5th season of the World Poker Tour's Championship event held at the Bellagio Casino in Las Vegas. He is the first poker player to be named champion of both the World Series of Poker Main Event back in 2001 and the World Poker Tour's Championship event.
Aside from that, Carlos Mortensen's $3.97 million prize cash is also considered the biggest prize ever given by the tour. The cash prize is also considered the 4th biggest first place reward in the history of the tour, with only 3 World Series of Poker Main Event winners Greg Raymer, Joe Hachem and Jamie Gold, having won more cash from their poker titles.
After triumphing through the 639 participants at the poker tournament and recovering from a million in total chips when there were only 4 players left, Carlos Mortensen found himself in a final showdown with Kirk Morrison having a slight disadvantage in his chips.
But in the end, Mortensen triumphed over Morrison in the poker game. The win put Mortensen's total tournament winnings at $8.5 million and placed him 7th on the All-time Money list and 2nd on the World Poker Tour All-Time list behind poker superstar, Daniel Negreanu from Canada.
This October, the World Poker Tour will be held in Spain for the very first time at the Casino Barcelona as part of WPT's season VI.
