On January 2nd, 2008, the last few days for the top honors of the Card Player Online Player of the Year race wear nerve wracking especially for the leaders. But in the end, poker player Isaac "westmenloAA" Baron won the prestigious recognition. The top two leaders, Baron, which has 8,304 points and Matt "ch0ppy" Kay, which has 8,278 points, has a only a twenty-six point difference between them with only a week of poker tournaments lefts after Baron race into the lead by wining the $200 rebuy event on PokerStars.
Kay could have made any OPOY-qualified finished in the remaining days to give himself a fighting chance to take home the title. The closest contender, Sorel "Imper1UM" Mizzi, was with 6,676 points. Mizzi, who was the previous leader, who need to win the PokerStars Sunday Million in order to catch up with the leaders. Baron closed out a good year with his OPOY award.
He began his ascent at the leader board by winning the title on the $500 buy-in version of the PokerStars Sunday Million on January 28th, 2008, where he won $255,000. Baron earned a total of $1,036,452, made thirty seven top twenty tournament finishes, made 20 final table appearances and won seven tournaments. Baron's opponents were unrelenting.
Kay started the year as the leader by winning the first Sunday Million in 2007. Both Baron and Mizzi spend time on the top bracket as the year progresses.
