Mark Vos, a Queensland University dropout, is a new millionaire courtesy of the 2006 World Series of Poker after bagging $1.08 million in one tournament.
Vos joins the rank of his purported arch nemesis Joe Hachem as Australia's premier poker bettors. Hachem was the 2005 WSOP Main Event winner, and has recently won $345,000 in the 2006 WSOP.
"It was really a surprise, but I always knew I was able to do it," said the 22 year-old upon claiming his first major title. "It feels really good to have that win when you're so young and (I) can use the money to do things for the rest of my life. Because I won here I can do whatever I want. I have all the options open to me."
Vos quit taking up his degree in Commerce to become a professional poker player. When asked what he intended to do with the money, he said he might use it to buy real estate or bankroll his poker career. He also expressed his intention to travel the world playing poker for the next five years before settling down.
Vos is already well-known in poker circles in Australia after winning several events at Crown Casino in Melbourne. In addition to that, Vos also plays regularly online. He finished eighth at the Australian Poker Championship in Melbourne, raking in $83,000 in January --- his biggest win until this week.
