Alexandre Gomes Wins Bellagio Cup Tournament

Cheered by a boisterous group of supporters from Brazil, Team PokerStars Pro member Alexandre Gomes cemented his reputation as an up and coming poker pro by winning the WPT's (world poker tour) Bellagio Cup in Las Vegas Nevada on July 20th, 2009. Gomes said that he is very thankful for his family and friends for supporting him all throughout the event because it gave him the confidence that he needs to win the event.

Gomes narrowly missed winning a EPT title to the world series of poker bracelet he won last year with a 4th place finish at the 2009 PokerStars Caribbean Adventure last January. But with a triumph on the WPT under his belt now, Gomes has to be viewed as one of the best poker players from Latin America. Gomes said that he thinks that there will be a real expansion of poker in Latin America soon. Online poker superstar and 2009 World Series of Poker $5K six-max finalist Faraz Jaka came into the heads-up showdown with the chip lead and Gomes was actually the smallest stack.

But the deep event structure permitted Gomes to be patient and he was able to defeat Jaka. With eight World Series of Poker bracelets and a World Poker Tour title already on his name, Erik Seidel was one of the names to watch for in the event but the Full Tilt Pro member was the first player to hit the rail. Seidel finished in 6th place when he could not overcome Justin Smith's over-pair. Smith sent home Swedish poker pro Christopher Sonesson, using a queen against his pocket 4's.

Alec Torelli finished in 4th place, who place it all-in in the pre-flop against Gomes. The highlight of the 3-handed play was a big double-up of Smith through Alexandre Gomes, where he not only grabbed the chip lead but achieved a runner-runner to accomplish a straight. But that would not last as Smith was sent home when Gomes doubled back against Smith with a large slick against his ace-queen.
