On March 22, 2007, it was announced that the 38th yearly World Series of Poker was just 72 days away. Just last week, WSOP CEO Jeffrey Pollack and his officials hosted a teleconference for the media discussing their plans for the 38th staging of the World Series of Poker tournament.
Pollack said that some of the additions that they have made are the inclusion of 9 events, making the amount of chips twice their previous amount, additional tournament details; improving the skills of their dealers and improving the quality of their food service.
The different events that have been added in the event were also discussed. Like the H.O.R.S.E. S.H.O.E. and the mixed limit and no-limit Hold'em poker tournaments. Pollack said that they have added the events because their players requested them. Another important topic discussed at the conference was the effects that the poker industry suffered as a result of the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act (UIGEA), which was approved on October 13, 2006.
Because of the UIGEA, the World Series of Poker will not be accepting players that register via third party sites which are still accepting players living in the United States. As a result of this decision by the World Series of Poker officials, this year's player attendance at the poker games might fall short of last year's.
According to Pollack, they are focusing on player experience rather than the number of players that will join the event. Nonetheless, some sectors are questioning that decision as the prize pool is dependent on the number of players that join the event. Last year, the prize pool reached $12 million. Jamie Gold was the winner of the 2006 World Series of Poker Tournament.
