$21,450 was raised by over 80 participants for a Texas Hold'em tournament held at the Peppermill Hotel Casino in Reno. The poker tournament was held for the benefit of the Western Nevada Community College baseball team.
First place was bagged by Ken Bartlett of Bartlett Architecture in Reno. He won a year's membership at Red Hawk Gold Course, valued at $4,000, as well as $1,000 in cash.
"Assistant baseball coach, Dennis Banks, deserves credit for organizing a great tournament," WNCC coach D.J. Whittemore said. "We are thankful so many people in the community are interested in supporting our team. These funds will allow us to play some of the top teams in the nation during our non-conference season."
A large portion of the funds raised from the event will be designated to the team's 2007 travel budget. The Wildcats will begin the upcoming season with a January 26 battle against Arizona-based Cochise Community College and Yavapai Community College, taking place in Henderson. Their first home game is scheduled for February 18th.
The annual poker tournament is now in its second year. Last year's tournament yielded $18,000 for the baseball program.
